| Farewell to Harry Kalas (1936-2009), The Voice of the Philadelphia Phillies |
|
.
April 13, 2009 Philadelphia Phillies fans heard the news that the baritone Voice of the Phillies and numerous NFL Film voice overs had passed away. Prior to the Washington Nationals Home Opener, they honored Harry with moment of silence, who had passed away where he loved to be, at the Ball Park. Harry who started his career in 1965 as the Houston Astros Announcer came to Philadelphia in 1971 and announced the games along with Richie "Whitey" Ashburn until Richie had passed away on Sept. 9, 1997. Harry who was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in 2002 made some of the Phillies historical calls such as Mike Schmidts' 500th Home Run to the final out of Game 5 of the 2008 World Series when Brad Lidge struckout Eric Hinske to win it all. From his signature "It's a long drive..." to "It's Outta Here" will be surely missed by everyone in Philadelphia area. The Phillies will be honoring Harry for every Home Game this Season by playing a video of Harry singing "High Hopes" at the seventh inning stretch on the outfield Scoreboard. Click here to hear a tribute put together by Marisa Magnata of the Preston & Steve Show on 93.3 WMMR in Philly, Philly's Rock Station. |

Non-sport Cards |

The Monkees TV Show premiered on NBC in September 1966 a comedy show about a 4 piece long haired rock band. It was patterned after "A Hard Days Night" starring The Beatles. The Monkees were America's answer to the Beatles. Soon plenty of memorabilia followed including "Bubblegum Cards" as they were called back then.
In 1966 Donruss released 4 series of Monkees cards. One set known as the Sepia set featured the "Faux Four" in sepia toned cards. Soon after 3 series in full color were released. The cards were popular and looking back today they are a great representation of what the pop music scene was like in the 60's. Check out our Monkees pages here
